Happy New Year!
Looking back on 2016 is a pleasure. Especially because of my students--those that went on to middle school, and those I have now. I am filled with gratitude for the blessings that have come my way. I am grateful for the gifts, and kindnesses, and support I've received while teaching your children. I am very grateful I have the opportunity to teach, to touch lives, to pass on a thirst for and love of learning. May your 2017 be filled with knowlege, wisdom, kindness, tender merices, and love.

Thank you, students and families, for all the wonderful gifts, cards, hugs, and support. This is an amazing class with amazing students and I am honored to be a part of it!
Our Pizza math lesson on fractions was a success. Thank you for all of your generous donations!!!! We have more project-based learning experiences planned for February, including a Chinese New Year Parade, a heart-healthy Valentine's snack (Look for another Sign-Up Genius!), and a review of the circulatory system.
Students are invited to write a short article about our Pizza-making experience. Articles that summarize our activity well and include the appropriate math vocabulary will be posted on our math page. We'll also include a few photos once I check the photo releases. On Thursday, we will have a guest speaker. The topic will be the climate, weather, history and culture of Australia. We've been comparing the seasonal and weather differences between the Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere. This activity should help support that learning. Thursday is test day for Math objectives 5.NF.1, 2, & 3--adding and subtracting fractions. A study guide will go home the day before. Students can review Learn Zillion videos and their classroom notes. Progress reports will go home this week as well. We are finished with the 5.OA objectives, though students are able to retake the end of unit test, or redo any assignment and have it re-scored if they desire. You are welcome to encourage them. The 5.NF.1-3 objectives are a work in progress (until Thursday, although students are always welcome to redo or retake as mentioned above). These scores are not yet written in stone. Please remember that this a learning environment and that many students initially need help and LOTS of practice to master a goal. Also, I have not yet given many level IV assignments. Students are welcome to work on projects in the purple folder during Challenge time and turn in those projects for a score. The purple folder was made available this week. They are coming and will be included on the report card. Ms. Eckels and I are excited to meet with all of you. We will set up a Sign-Up Genius for conferences starting next week and continuing beyond track-out/in. If you need a different time, please contact one of us via email or written note and we will do our best to accommodate you. Please remember that we have 49 sets of parents with which to meet. |
